Is Tandem BASE jumping safe?
Tandem BASE Moab and its affiliates – Tandem BASE in Idaho and Tandem BASE Europe have had zero injuries or fatalities since helping pioneer Tandem BASE jumping in 2012. With a combined 60 years of experience around parachuting, 35,000 skydives, and 20,000 BASE jumps the ‘Tandem BASE’ team has had zero injuries or incidents.
When people state that BASE jumping is one of the most dangerous activities in the world, they are referring to the sport in general. This includes wingsuit BASE jumping and jumpers pushing the limits with very little margin for error. Like crossing the street, it can be done dangerously or relatively safely. If you run out on a busy highway, you are likely to get hit. If you stop and look both ways and cross when there is no traffic, the risk is minimal.
The Tandem BASE team utilizes the same refined protocols on every jump. While the experience is thrilling, Tandem BASE is not endeavoring to do anything new or experimental with clients. A well tested technique is used called a “static line” deployment. It is the same technique the military uses. It ensures that the parachute opens in the same consistent amount of time and in the same consistent direction (away from the cliff) every time. Tandem BASE Moab takes safety seriously, and only jumps the highest quality gear. Tandem BASE Moab is proud to jump Squirrel tandem BASE parachutes. They are only available to a selective handful of people around the world. Squirrel takes safety seriously as well, and vets who can use their equipment, as does Black Sheep Rigging. Black Sheep manufactures the harness that clients wear and the container that the parachute is packed into. Fun fact, Black Sheep gear is manufactured locally in Moab, Utah.
